Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute is a 501(c)(3) leadership development organization focusing on developing life-long skills for adults and children of Washington, DC.

Since its establishment in 1995, and incorporation as a nonprofit in 2003, HTCMLI has put community back into martial arts. HTCMLI teaches children, and adults of all ages. Well-being, health and safety are primary drivers of our nonprofit program; and community welfare is our mission.

We are teaching the curriculum free to DC schoolchildren thanks to generous funding obtained through DC city funds and Learn24.

HTCMLl teaches Kung Fu, Chinese Lion Dance, Chinese Thunder Drumming, African Djembe Drumming to DC schoolchildren ages 6-18 for free. In addition to individual training, children learn to participate in gala events on traditional stages and open floors as a team. During the summer, they attend field trips to historic DC area locations and museums, and are visited by guest speakers from the Washington DC community.

Adult student participation helps us to reach in to the community to lift us all up with knowledge and life-long skills. You and we, put community back into martial arts. We invite adult students to learn how to be fit, strong, and to defend themselves.

We understand that adults may have prior experience from other martial arts systems, or no experience at all. It is also very common for adults to frequently travel, or pass through DC on assignment. Adults in DC are also constrained by working late or limited free time. We work with these challenges to teach adults Kung Fu, Drumming, Lion Dance and Tai Chi. This adult training includes strength-training, stretching, meditation, forms, self-defense technique, sparring, testing, and cultural history.

Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute has brought young and older Washingtonians to travel and compete in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. During this post-pandemic era the nonprofit continues to maintain contact with Jow Ga leaders around the world.

By participating in the Leadership Institute's programs and attending the Institute's classes, students of any age develop life-enhancing skills along with positive values, a sense of purpose and direction. Confidence and skills developed through our program equip students to set personal goals. Ultimately, students develop the power to reach those goals while overcoming life's inevitable challenges.

The Institute's training program develops physical strength, a strong will, a quickened mind, and an ethical and moral base from which to evaluate one's own actions and the actions of others. Students learn self-reliance, personal responsibility, pursuit of excellence, and to become successful leaders in their chosen fields.Training at the HTCMLI is preparation for living a meaningful life.
