Mission Statement The Hung Tao Choy Mei Kung Fu Academy has as its aim and purpose to promote the Jow Ga style of Kung Fu in the United States of America as a means for individuals to achieve self mastery through physical, mental and spiritual training.
We accept all who are willing to undergo the rigorous training regardless of age, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin.
We believe that the martial arts are an excellent means for cultivating friendly relationships and cooperation and should not be used to exercise dominance or control over others.
We teach kung fu in its most realistic form without the use of tricks, deceptions, or supernatural claims.
We build men and women of noble character who are well able to serve as leaders in their communities.
We foster the development of all, including those who wish to go no further than the novice level as well as those desiring to compete for tournament championships or to become teachers and promoters of the style.
We seek to establish friendly and cooperative relationships with Jow Ga schools worldwide, to exchange knowledge, to foster good will, to encourage vigorous and enthusiastic practice of the art, and to promote the re-evaluation, discovery, improvement, and better understanding of this ancient art form. Our annual fundraiser will occur on Saturday, 2 May 2009, at the historic Lincoln Theatre. A full announcement detailing the recipient of the Paul Robeson "Here I Stand" Award and other special guests, is forthcoming.
Some have asked the question - why do we do these types of things? Traditional kung fu schools like ours have always been an integral part of the community where it resides. The school served many purposes but the foremost one was teaching survival skills and developing the young into strong future leaders exhibiting character, integrity, and an aim and purpose in life. These events allow us to provide our young students and adults an opportunity to bond with the local community by presenting events of substance and meaning to their lives. Our first Town Hall meeting "Healing Ourselves - A Health and Wellness call to action was very well received and our best attended event. Our second was "Ending Youth Violence and Murder" in Washington, DC. This event (because of its unpleasant nature) was not quite as well attended but we received much praise our efforts. Our fundraiser event in 2007 with Dick Gregory was a wonderful evening that we hope you did not miss.
We do these events to demonstrate to our students and the community that it is the right and duty of every citizen to work to eliminate injustice in their community and their lives. We do it in a very visible manner to make our point. We also want our students to know that they do not have to have any specific credentials, job title or lofty position to work for change. You only need the will and desire and then commit yourself to action (key word action).
We believe that we have distinguished ourselves from other martial arts schools who have never risen above the physical aspects of the art to establish themselves as true "rafts in the waters of turbulent times" for our young people, as we have done for over ten years on U Street.
