Lion Crouching

The Hung Tao Choy Mei "Lucky Lions" are the irrefutable and indisputable "Lion Kings" of the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Our lion dance teams are unusual and exciting additions to banquets, weddings, grand openings and special events of all kinds to promote prosperity and good fortune. Traditional Chinese drumming, cymbals, and a gong accompany the performers. The performances can be tailored to fit into the schedule of the planned event. Most performances run between 10 and 20 minutes and if desired more than one lion can perform. The number of performers can range from as few as 7 to larger more complex arrangements of 20 or more dancers and musicians.

Each lion is played by a pair of dancers. One dancer wears a large colorful paper mache head with flashing eyes and snapping jaws, while another wears a long brightly colored satin and fur body. Together they prance, pounce and mimic the movements of a playful lion, performing a loosely scripted routine that allows for lively interaction with guests and spectators. At every performance, the lion begins and ends his dance by ritualistically bowing to the Heavens, to the Earth, and to the People, reminding us that his purpose is to bestow heavenly blessings and earthly good fortune on all present. To add to the excitement, the lion dancers are usually teamed with kung fu fighters, who are always happy to demonstrate their exceptional skill with flying acrobatics and whirling swords.
